This website, developed by Mathew Johnson and sponsored by the Kabuki actor Ichimura Manjiro, is a small, privately run webpage. It is an attempt by the authors to promote interest and study in Kabuki and has some very useful information. The page is split up into four major sections: Online Theater, Kabuki Sounds, Make Up, and All About Kabuki. The first section, Online Theater has a synopsis of three Kabuki plays, Fuji Musume, The Zen Substitute, and Ichiriki Teahouse. Fuji Musume has a short Quicktime movie of an onnagata dance. The second section, Kabuki Sounds, has downloadable examples of the major Kabuki instruments as well as a short one or two sentence description of them. It also has recordings of different kakegoe or chants for different Kabuki actors. The third section, Make Up, is a small section which shows a step by step application of Kabuki makeup and the processes that are involved. There is also a Quicktime movie which depicts the transformation.. The last section, All About Kabuki, has links to other Kabuki web pages and a section called Kabuki History. This section is split into the different periods and movements of Kabuki. The web page has some major faults but it does well for an independent website. Two major complaints are that none of the Kabuki sound clips function and the Kabuki History section, though well written, is still under construction. The best part of the website is a very comprehensive bibliography of books on Kabuki for the intention of research. Though limited in many aspects, the site has many good ideas and does well for a private webpage. -Owen Strock |
