This website offers a brief overview of the
history of Japanese Art focusing on painting,
sculpture, ceramics and architecture in particular.
From the homepage one can direct themselves to a
variety of links such as Japanese Prehistory, Asuka
and Nara Art, Heian Art, Kamakura Art, Muromachi
Art, Momoyama Art, Art of the Edo Period, and Art
since 1867. If you were interested in learning
about the art during Edo then when you clicked on
the link you would find ample resources on specific
forms of art from the period such as architecture,
painting, and woodblock prints. You can explore
these subtopics further by learning about the
people during the period that had profound impacts
on the arts such as Hiroshige. Hiroshige's link
provides a short biographical piece on his life and
even has a few links to some of his works.
This website is aimed at people interested in an
all-encompassing look at the arts of Japan and the
people who have helped to create them. Nicolas
Pioch, a consultant for major internet companies,
created this site in 1996. In my opinion this
website is a great starting point for those who
know a little about Japanese Art and are interested
in knowing more about periods and other specified
types of works.
