I. Contents and organization.

This unit will focus on the film, photography, and graphic design of the postwar era.

1. Firstly, we will discuss the Asian-Pacific War, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the Allied occupation. We will discuss selected works of postwar photographers, including Kimura Ihee, Horace Bristol, and Tomatsu Shômei (gallery one); and we will view the film Stray Dog by director Kurosawa Akira (1949).

2. Secondly, we will consider the reaction to American political and cultural hegemenoy and discuss the Japanese counterculture in the 1960's, viewing and discussing the work of graphic designer Yokoo Tadanori (gallery three).
